Due to its colonial roots, you can find older buildings in Cartago from the 19th century, giving us a look at the past. One example is the Colegio de San Luis Gonzaga (a high school) founded in 1842 in Cartago, during the mandate of General Francisco Morazán, by the Constituent Assembly, through decree XCVIII of September 10, 1842, as a school for boys. It is named after Saint Louis Gonzaga, who was declared by Pope Benedict XIII as the patron of youth. It was the first secondary education institution in the country.
